Varsha Krishnan won Synopsis - paper presentation competition held by FMS Delhi. Her paper was on e-retailing illustrating future growth opportunities for non-profit organizations.

The quizzing wizards Vijay Pillai and Siddharth Natarajan won 2nd prize at both the Electron Quiz organized by NTPC and Prashnavali organized by IIT SJMSOM on the 10th and 28th of October 2007 respectively.

Eco Forum hosts Guest Lecture by Mr. A V Rajwade

The Economic Forum at SPJIMR recently hosted a guest lecture by Mr. A V Rajwade on the Subprime Crisis as part of its strategic task to enhance interaction between participants and experts from the field of economics. The Subprime Crisis has been haunting the US economy for the past few months and its impact is now starting to be felt globally, especially on the Asian economies of China and India.

Mr. A V Rajwade, the eminent speaker, has been an independent Forex and Treasury management consultant for over two decades. He currently holds the position of a director in several public and private limited companies as well as being the Member/Chairman of various sub-committees of these companies. He is also a former member of the supervisory board of India Opportunities Fund, Bermuda and Mauritius, and Director of CRISIL, India's first credit-rating company.

Organised on the 1st of December 2007, the guest lecture was well attended by participants cutting across different programs. Mr. Rajwade spoke about certain fundamentals such as credit derivatives, credit default swaps, total return swaps, structured finance, collateralised debt obligations (CDO’s), risk and uncertainty and how all these fundamentals help us to diagnose the root cause of the recent credit crisis/subprime crisis. Overall, the lecture proved to be extremely informative and we look forward to similar sessions in the future.

SPJIMR hosts HSBC seminar on CSR

On 28th November 2007, SPJIMR in association with 'Partners in Change' and HSBC organized a CSR seminar as part of the lecture series on 'Investing in Business Leaders of Tomorrow', conceptualized and implemented by Partners in Change. 25 studens from the Industrial Engineering and Business Administration courses of the University of Twente, Netherlands, attended the seminar as a part of their study tour to evaluate CSR practices and initiatives of business enterprises in India.

The seminar was inaugurated by Mr. Peter Brew from IBLF (International Business Leadership Forum) and Mr. Viraf Mehta, CEO, PIC. Mr. Brew spoke about the need for students to take interest in issues affecting the society at a global level. Mrs. Malini Thadani, corporate head, HSBC gave a brief presentation on the CSR initatives taken up by HSBC in India and abroad.


A documentary titled ‘The Merchant princes of Bombay', which tracked growth from that of HSBC right from the days of David Sassoon, to the growth of charity from philanthropy in latter days, to CSR initiatives of corporate today, was screened. This was followed by a panel discussion on 'The Scope for inclusion of CSR in Management Curriculum'. The panel moderated by Mr. Sarang Tamhane, comprised of Mr. D.B. Raju (Larsen & Toubro Ltd.), Ms. Hima Mehta (Colgate Palmolive) and Ms. Suvrata Gharge ( Head-CSR, Mahindra & Mahindra).


Students and alumni from SPJIMR, students from University of Twente and those from AIESEC, shared their views on CSR and the day ended with a splendid high tea; all for a good cause! CSR aware and skilled human capital is becoming vital to a company's sustainability and not enough is being done to foster it. The DOCC committee took an initiative of organizing this event and very effectively highlighted that CSR is the need of the hour.

SBU Marketing organizes workshop on 'Branding'

SBU Marketing arranged for a two day workshop on ‘Branding’ for the future marketer on the 23rd and 24th of November 2007. The workshop was conducted by Mr. Anand Halve, alumnus of IIMA and founder of the Chlorophyll brand & communications consultancy, Mumbai. The workshop talked about the nuances of branding, giving the participants a preview into how branding is done for various products ranging from eggs to newspapers. It gave them an opportunity to put on their creative hats and act as brand managers for specific products. The participants were divided into teams and each team was given the task of coming up with creatives for a specific product.

Mr. Halve has been in the thick of the advertising world for over 28 years now. He has extensive experience in advertising and research for advertising, having worked in Research and Account Management at major advertising agencies including Lintas, Rediffusion and Enterprise, before Chlorophyll. He has presented research papers on Communication topics at MRSI (Marketing Research Society of India) and is a regular visiting faculty at MICA (Mudra Institute of Communications, Ahmedabad), and IIMA (Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad). He has also authored a popular book ‘Planning for Power Advertising’, in the year 2005.

Mr. Halve critiqued the presentations and shared his views on them, making it a tremendous learning experience for the presenters. The workshop saw a huge turnout and was appreciated by one and all. Mr. Halve with his wittiness and good sense of humour, kept the participants in splits whilst recounting his experiences in the advertising world, spanning almost 25 years.

Guest Lecture by Mr. Ramesh Damani


A guest lecture was organized by the Eco Forum on the 19th of November 2007. The eminent speaker invited for the lecture was Mr. Ramesh S. Damani, member of the Bombay Stock Exchange Limited and a broker for over 16 years. Mr. Damani is also a well known host of the TV show, “Dalals of Wall Street” on CNBC TV 18 and a frequent commentator on financial issues on CNBC and NDTV news. The topic for the guest lecture was - “THE BULL RUN” The Stock market boom – Is it real???

Mr. Ramesh Damani commenced the lecture by highlighting the major bull runs over past century. He spoke about the dynamics behind a bull run and the dimensions attached to it viz. price and time. He also gave some basic rules for novice investors such as invest early, think long-term and hold on to your investments. Towards the end, a short question and answer session was held during which questions related to future trends of the stock market, impact of population on growth rage and the impact of BRIC countries on the global economy was discussed.

Overall, the event was an enriching experience for all the participants who came away with a better understanding of complex financial issues. We look forward to more such interesting lectures organized by the Eco Forum, who deserve kudos for a job well done.
